The Climate Mission is where we can accelerate!
Eindhoven and Helmond are working on an ambitious mission: becoming more sustainable faster. A more sustainable environment not only contributes to clean air and healthy nature but also to the well-being of everyone who lives, works and recreates. Now and in the future.
With the Climate Mission, Eindhoven and Helmond, together with companies, knowledge institutions, organisations and residents, are heading towards fossil-free, circular, and climate-resilient cities. This course consists of jointly defined city themes, linked to mission pathways. With the Climate Mission, we are taking steps together.
Update!
In September, we submitted our plan to Brussels for the EU mission ‘100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities’. The goal is to get a Mission Label and European support. Because the Climate Mission pulls out all the stops to speed up! We expect to know more before the Summer.
Discover the themes
During the labs and conferences in 2023, together with the city, we defined four city themes. Want to know more about Vital Inner City, Sustainable Neighborhoods, Robust Region and Resilient Enterprises? View them here.
Discover the missions
We have defined 22 mission pathways, linked to the city themes. Some missions transcend themes, such as working on climate-neutral mobility for both Sustainable Neighborhoods, Vital Inner City and Resilient Enterprises. Want to know more about the missions? View them on these overview pages.
Discover the projects
Our mission pathways are objectives to achieve climate neutrality but contain no concrete actions yet. Therefore, we translate the pathways into projects with concrete results, which will contribute to our goals for circular, fossil-free and climate-neutral. We keep adding projects and linking them to pathways. For the current overview, look here.

Projects
There are already many projects in Helmond and Eindhoven contributing to a climate-neutral city. Below you will find a random selection of these projects.

Description
In earlier research, Summa College sought a vision and approach for the transition to a future-proof learning environment. An important goal is to engage students, teachers, stakeholders, and local residents in this transition with concrete interventions. In this previous research, a climate toolbox was developed. For this project, there is a desire to collaboratively develop a concrete plan with students, teachers, stakeholders, and local residents to transform the hard-surfaced parking area into a climate-adaptive and biodiverse meeting space. The Sterrenlaan location serves as a pilot project to make the start of the transition visually apparent.

Description
In 2016, the municipality signed a cooperation agreement under the name 'Smart Sustainable Municipal Buildings' with !MPULS (a partnership of several companies) for a duration of 10 + 5 years. In addition to management and (major) maintenance, we will make the municipal buildings (NRE, Town Hall, Town Hall Tower, Mercado, and Van Abbemuseum) and their immediate surroundings (e.g., Smart Thermal Grid (STG) Town Hall Square) more sustainable over ten years based on the principles of The Natural Step. The Town Hall Tower was completed in 2018, and the Town Hall in 2020 (except for the PVT roof). Work is currently underway on Mercado and the Van Abbemuseum, the STG Town Hall Square, and the PVT roof of the Town Hall. The NRE building is scheduled for completion in 2025. The available renovation and maintenance budget for both buildings has been used for the sustainability efforts. By cleverly combining the budgets and incorporating flexibility into the cooperation agreement (through an alliance), we have maximized the sustainability without increasing the annual costs. Moreover, the buildings are now future-proof in every respect and also prepared for hybrid working.
