With the collective collection round, we periodically drive through the business parks to collect pallets, ICT waste, cans, batteries, and other specific waste streams from companies. We bring these to local partners who can recycle them in a high-quality manner. This way, even small quantities of these well-recyclable waste streams no longer end up in the residual waste. Raw materials are becoming scarce and increasingly expensive. With the Raw Materials Round, we focus on the smart exchange of residual and waste streams. The platform was established to support companies in the transition to a circular economy. The focus is on achieving industrial symbiosis through the software tool InduSym. Companies can offer their waste streams to other companies that want to use them as raw materials. The platform facilitates the search for and offering of raw materials, enabling automatic matches with other companies. In addition to materials, vehicles, tools, spaces, services, and even personnel can also be exchanged. The platform offers opportunities for renting or leasing resources and sharing personnel. The concept of industrial symbiosis is used to utilize the waste stream of one company as raw material for another. This leads to more efficient, economically viable, and sustainable business parks. Sustainability of Industrial Park de Hurk is focused on four sub-tasks: sustainable and smart energy use, space for greenery, water and innovation, sustainable construction and closing loops. The traditional method of waste collection, where each company has its residual streams collected individually by different collectors, leads to an abundance of heavy vehicles in business parks and/or the city center. This situation causes traffic congestion, is accompanied by emissions, and affects the infrastructure. To address this, the Foundation for Business Parks Helmond is developing the resource hub. This initiative introduces small, lightweight electric vehicles that frequently visit companies to collect their separated residual streams. Central to this renewed approach is the physical hub: a strategic point where the collected residual streams are brought together for transshipment. From this hub, the residual streams are distributed to the appropriate processing or recycling facilities, resulting in a more streamlined and circular processing of residual streams.

The municipality of Eindhoven wants to help all homeowners' associations in Eindhoven with the sustainability of their buildings. The offer includes, among other things, an info desk, meetings, courses, a campaign box, and advice. In the long term, process guidance will be added.

Circle City Eindhoven is a collaboration in the construction sector between the municipality, housing corporations, developers, builders, advisors, and designers. The parties signed the covenant 'Regional Circular Construction Strategy Eindhoven' in 2023. It was agreed that the organizations will apply The New Normal and submit two projects for evaluation with The New Normal. In 2024, we will work with Circle City Eindhoven on topics 1) circular renovation, 2) materials & designs, and 3) circularity & finance. By measuring and analyzing energy data, unnecessary consumption can be easily identified and prevented. The results vary by building, with savings of nearly 30% in some cases.

Water and greenery are essential for the design of public spaces in city centers and neighborhoods, supporting social, retail, and recreational activities. This requires freeing up space by using existing buildings more efficiently and reducing car traffic, which leads to more opportunities for greening. In addition, climate adaptation is necessary, such as greening gardens, parks, and roofs.

A major challenge is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from mobility. Private cars are responsible for a significant portion of mobility-related greenhouse gas emissions. Instead of replacing all private vehicles with an internal combustion engine (ICE) with electric vehicles (EV), cities are interested in finding alternative solutions for private car ownership. Inspired by generational changes that have occurred in society, such as driving under the influence, wearing seatbelts, and smoking in public, cities want to challenge the market, stakeholders, and citizens by launching this 'Last Generation of Private Car Owners Challenge'.

In the Eindhoven metropolitan region, municipalities and healthcare institutions have united to fulfill their responsibilities and, especially together with the healthcare institutions, implement the agreements from the National Energy Agreement of 2013 regarding sustainable growth and a widely supported, future-proof energy and climate policy. The aim is to further improve the environmental performance of the healthcare institutions. Through this partnership, the partners want to share knowledge, seize additional opportunities for a better environment, and enhance their performance under the motto: Together you achieve more than alone. The participating partners are named below. This Green Deal aligns with a national Green Deal that is also supported by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

The green deal events started in 2020 and will run until 2024. The green deal has been signed by 11 frontrunners, event organizers. They have made agreements to develop a CO2 reduction plan on the topics of energy, materials and plastic, food & drink, mobility, diversity and inclusion. They have drawn up an action plan to achieve the objectives in the agreement.

This is a collaboration between the labor market region Helmond de Peel, Southeast Brabant, and Brainport Development. The task: there is sufficient suitable, flexible, and inclusive talent in the Brainport region to enable the transitions for Climate Adaptation, Energy, and the Circular Economy (KEC). A Human Capital Agenda for KEC transitions is being developed for this purpose. This provides insight into the necessary (future) regional labor market demand, the required activities and resources to meet this demand, and brings focus. Initiatives and partners are also connected to each other. There is a goal towards one regional agenda from a partnership between education, government, employers, employees, and implementation institutions. In the spring of 2024, this should lead to an established Human Capital Agenda, after which targeted work can begin on the implementation. We would like to incorporate what has been gathered in the Climate Mission process and ensure that those who registered for our process are involved.

Volunteers help residents green their gardens, making the immediate living environment more resilient to climate change and climate-adaptive. This is still just an idea and is not yet being implemented. The current setup of the project has existed for 6 years and provides status holders a place to integrate and participate by maintaining the gardens of vulnerable residents, allowing them to live independently for a longer time.

Within the City Theme Livable Neighborhoods, Vitalis wants to collaborate on various mission trajectories. Within the trajectory ‘Circular Neighborhoods and Sustainable Consumption’, Vitalis wants to think about the collection and processing of waste products into new products.

The Smart Sustainable Real Estate Program (SVV) is an approach in which we make municipal buildings more sustainable (as a role model) while simultaneously collaborating smartly with property owners on the sustainability of all buildings in the city. By making our own real estate more sustainable, we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience. With that, we are happy to help other property owners on their way. The integrated approach is central to this. By cleverly combining maintenance costs with structural adjustments and fully utilizing subsidy options, you can reduce the energy costs of your real estate and extend its economic lifespan. In the first phase of the two-phase approach, particularly profitable measures (monitoring, LED lighting, and solar panels) were implemented first. In the second phase, SVV will develop instruments, conduct pilots with area-based approaches and new innovations, and make example projects more sustainable, etc., with the aim of accelerating the sustainability of all buildings in the city through SVV.

Cities 4.0 is a European subsidy project to support Bologna, Eindhoven, Helmond, Leuven, and Turku in their climate mission. The challenge for all cities is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing homes and buildings. With an average renovation rate of 0.2% in Europe, it would take well into 2050 for all homes and buildings to be modernized. The cities involved in the Cities 4.0 project want to investigate how the renovation of the existing housing stock can be accelerated. An industrialized solution is needed that provides standardized renovations and partial solutions. To identify solutions, a challenge has been set. The selected parties will work on a pilot in Leuven and Bologna.

We at Stam+ de Koning Bouw would like to reduce and separate waste. However, we often encounter the issue that there is not enough space on the construction site, resulting in a large amount of waste going into the residual waste container. This makes it more difficult to recycle the waste.

We will not achieve the goals of the climate mission by just involving citizens in the change. It is important to make the positive side visible and tangible, and to ensure that everyone can participate. The Living Lab 040 therefore has a citizen think tank. Our ambition is to bridge the gap between citizens and professionals, as well as solutions. In the think tank, a group of engaged citizens (from both within and outside Eindhoven) participates, who want to actively think about the challenges in their city of tomorrow. They have a voice here, are involved in innovations, and can even live in the testing ground. We want to activate all knowledge through the citizen think tank to bring the sustainability task closer to the citizens, by organizing various events and small-scale projects within and outside the Living Lab. We can also use this tool to gauge adoption and resistance to innovation.

In earlier research, Summa College sought a vision and approach for the transition to a future-proof learning environment. An important goal is to engage students, teachers, stakeholders, and local residents in this transition with concrete interventions. In this previous research, a climate toolbox was developed. For this project, there is a desire to collaboratively develop a concrete plan with students, teachers, stakeholders, and local residents to transform the hard-surfaced parking area into a climate-adaptive and biodiverse meeting space. The Sterrenlaan location serves as a pilot project to make the start of the transition visually apparent.

Within this project, we want to connect organic food to biodiversity and our own living environment: from food chain to food web, from mouth to soil. We aim to make the organic food chain visible through video and blockchain. We want to increase the organic supply in the hospitality sector and promote knowledge exchange and collaboration. We want to set a good example with organic production and consumption - good examples inspire imitation.

Young entrepreneurs present innovative ideas that contribute to the Climate Mission.

Climate jobs are jobs that arise in, among others, the technical sector as a result of the energy transition. There is a significant shortage of personnel in this sector. Additionally, the types of jobs created are very diverse: from solar panel installers to cleanup assistants to enable insulation to be installed. The Climate Jobs Project aims to connect job seekers with these jobs. It is being investigated whether a neighborhood-oriented approach is feasible and desirable.

Many of the products we use daily come from afar. This not only results in significant CO2 emissions due to transport, but it is also vulnerable. By producing products locally, less transport is needed. We become less dependent and more self-sufficient.

Products from the Land of Peel do not come from far and are made with passion. Farmers produce delicious and honest products in the Land of Peel. The Innovatiehuis de Peel and Land van de Peel want to give more recognition and visibility to this. Through strategic promotion, they aim to put the products and producers on the map and increase revenue. Urban-rural connections and regional products serve as the basis for regional experiences. Pullman Eindhoven wants to contribute to the Climate Mission and the mission trajectory "Local is the norm" by focusing on sourcing local food.

On industrial estates, the risk of waterlogging and heat is high due to the lack of greenery and the presence of a lot of hard surfaces. Damage and inconvenience caused by climate change on industrial estates can be mitigated by designing them to be green and shaded. This makes industrial estates more climate-resilient and enhances the quality of the living and working environment.

Stam + De Koning wants to apply more environmental psychology in projects: what effect does the physical (built) living environment have on humans? For example, the positive effects of greenery and wood. But also how people deal with sustainable measures.

With the aim of a Peel Public-Private partnership (PPP), we want to manage the investment burden, transition period, and marketing of agroforestry systems, with the goal of contributing to (1) the sustainability of agriculture (2) positively addressing the nitrogen and water issues (3) strengthening the Peel landscape and biodiversity.

With Peel Positief, we are collaborating with pioneers to make the region net positive. For this, we are collectively working towards several goals (100% circular, absorbing more than emitting, and 100% inclusive), based on shared values (positivity, personal responsibility, inclusivity, and action). By having shared values and goals, a bond of trust is established between the pioneers, making them more inclined to help each other. This way, collaboration and knowledge sharing are strengthened.

As Soontiëns Stadsnatuur, we would like to get started within the mission trajectory of a healthy green working environment. We want to take the next step now.

Why is it not possible to enjoy a street where you meet neighbors, children play outside, and you are surrounded by greenery even on the 5th floor? With this project, we are developing an alternative to the commonly used apartment building, allowing us to achieve high densities in a qualitative manner. A structure (exo-skeleton) creates a winding path upward, adjacent to plateaus (elevated ground level), on which residences and communal facilities are built. Affordable, inclusive, with nature, temporary and permanent. An initiative by LL040, open to innovative parties to join.

In 2016, the municipality signed a cooperation agreement under the name 'Smart Sustainable Municipal Buildings' with !MPULS (a partnership of several companies) for a duration of 10 + 5 years. In addition to management and (major) maintenance, we will make the municipal buildings (NRE, Town Hall, Town Hall Tower, Mercado, and Van Abbemuseum) and their immediate surroundings (e.g., Smart Thermal Grid (STG) Town Hall Square) more sustainable over ten years based on the principles of The Natural Step. The Town Hall Tower was completed in 2018, and the Town Hall in 2020 (except for the PVT roof). Work is currently underway on Mercado and the Van Abbemuseum, the STG Town Hall Square, and the PVT roof of the Town Hall. The NRE building is scheduled for completion in 2025. The available renovation and maintenance budget for both buildings has been used for the sustainability efforts. By cleverly combining the budgets and incorporating flexibility into the cooperation agreement (through an alliance), we have maximized the sustainability without increasing the annual costs. Moreover, the buildings are now future-proof in every respect and also prepared for hybrid working.

Did you know that even if you exercise enough, play sports, and eat healthily, living in the city can be unhealthy? This is related to the quality of the outdoor air we breathe. Therefore, in the Living LAB 040, we investigate how to create residential neighborhoods with healthy air bubbles by experimenting with outdoor air purification based on available technology. Our ambition is to reduce lung diseases, develop a healthy air design methodology for cities, optimize the technology, generate evidence, and translate insights into physical products and guidelines (product development).
